This character cottage in the South Downs required sensitive modernisation while preserving the charm and identity the clients loved.

Delivered as a Design & Build, the project had no formal architectural drawings. Every decision – from layout refinements to material choices – was shaped through shared mood boards, collaborative discussions, and a clear understanding of the clients’ aspirations.

The works included excavating all ground floors, installing a full underfloor heating system, and upgrading the cottage’s heating supply with a new air source heat pump, improving comfort, efficiency and long-term performance. As part of the programme, we also re-roofed the entire cottage, coordinating carefully around the presence of protected bats, ensuring the works were timed and executed with full ecological responsibility.

Craft, communication and steady execution were at the heart of the project, resulting in a home that remains authentic to its original character while offering enhanced function, warmth and everyday usability.
