Large Extension & Complete Refurbishment – Harting Down
AIM were commissioned to transform a modest bungalow overlooking the South Downs into a spacious five-bedroom family home. Parts of the original structure dated back to the 18th century, with hints of Victorian school-house character, but the building was tired and in need of thoughtful renewal.
Awarded to AIM through a tender process on a cost-plus basis, the project began with a period of close collaboration. The clients recognised their scope needed refining, so together we worked through the details, exploring materials and approaches that aligned with their vision.
A defining moment came early on. As we broke ground, we encouraged the clients to consider re-using the stone excavated from the site to form the new external walls. With a little persuasion – and a welcome leap of faith – they embraced the idea. This choice honoured the landscape, reduced environmental impact, and rooted the new home in its surroundings in a truly meaningful way.
Now complete, the house is unrecognisable from its former self. Light, spacious, and beautifully finished, it blends traditional character with modern living. Both the clients and the AIM team are immensely proud of the result.
